Every soulslike needs a reason to respawn. In WUCHANG, that reason is literally in your inventory: a fragment of the tool that once let ancient Shu touch immortality — then broke when the Bo rebelled and the Avian kings warred. Module C3 turns the macguffin into readable culture: what each color means, who abused resurrection last, and why Wuchang's sister quest repeats Lu Hongliu's warning.

Myth first: one chisel, five scars

Game lore (Storyteller / Bo Capital flashbacks) compresses Shu prehistory into a civil war: Duryal (杜宇, Du Yu) led the Avians; Bieling (鳖灵, Bie Ling) sought to bend reality with dark rites and Red Mercury. A sealing artifact entombed the Bo Capital — and fractured into five chisels scattered across the land.

Classical chronicles rarely name a záo zi (凿子) in the Du Yu arc — Leenzee merged:

• Shu king succession myths from Huayang Guo Zhi
• Bronze-tool / ritual-implement imagination from Sanxingdui-adjacent aesthetics
• Soulslike design: five keyed upgrades + ending assembly at the Gate

Culturally, the number five (五) echoes Wuxing five phases, five directions, five grains — a Chinese shorthand for “the whole system broke.” When you collect five differently named fragments, you are completing the cosmology, not just filling a quest log.

The five chisels in gameplay

Note naming variance in English localizations: Vermilion vs Vermillion, Aurum for gold — all refer to the same in-game items.

Ancient Chisel: the loop in your pocket

Wuchang's default fragment explains soulslike structure diegetically: resting at a shrine enters a Dream that rewinds the battlefield while refilling resources. Community lore ties the original theft to her father Bai Tingzhao (白廷昭) — a Ming governor-general who took a chisel from Zhenwu Temple trying to revive his son Bai Kru, with results echoing every later abuse of the tool.

The Ancient Chisel therefore carries two readings:

• Mechanical — checkpoint and upgrade hub access
• Narrative — family curse; Wuchang inherits the same instrument that destroyed her brother and will tempt her about Bai Yu

When the Nightmare Demon attacks, it is explicitly born from karma accumulated across these resurrections — the game accusing the player of overusing the very myth the plot condemns.

Jade: resurrection as tragedy template

The Jade fragment's story beats repeat with variations:

• Lu Hongliu — novelist Luo's resurrected daughter; Wuchang's pre-game death
• Fang Ling — Snowfall Palace bride revived by Huang Yan; becomes Perfect Bride boss
• Bai Kru — Wuchang's brother; toddler horror in family marsh
• Bai Yu — the sister Wuchang still wants to pull through the Gate

In Chinese burial culture, jade (玉) guards the dead and symbolizes nobility — using a jade-named god-tool to force life back into corpses inverts the material's meaning. That is why Honglan (Imperial Guard) and Huang Yan (Snowfall Palace) both touch the Jade arc: state power and domestic cruelty share the same forbidden method.

Aurum: Zhang Xianzhong raised wrong

Rebels at Zhenwu Temple use the gold chisel to resurrect Zhang Xianzhong as the Fierce Tiger boss — a direct fusion of documented late Ming warlord trauma with mythic artifact abuse. Gold (jīn) signals imperial yellow's cousin — wealth, mandate, alchemical perfection — yet the outcome is a tiger-demon, not restoration of Great West order.

For culture readers who finished Warlords & Factions: historical Zhang died in 1647; the game asks, what if loyalists or rebels tried to print him back into existence with Shu god-tech? The Aurum chisel is that thought experiment made loot.

Vermilion: the last emperor's second corpse

Ming loyalists wield the Vermilion chisel to resurrect Zhu Youjian (崇祯, Chongzhen's personal name in many sources) as the Dragon Emperor — a feathered abomination wearing imperial red. Item flavor text frames the dynasty already fallen; loyalists pour everything into molding true form from a dead emperor — ghoulish mirror of real Southern Ming pretenders and ghost emperors in collapse eras.

Do not confuse this boss with Vermilion Feathers Honglan (鸿岚) earlier in Cloudspire — different character, similar color coding (Ming red + feather mutation). The Vermilion chisel drops from Zhu Youjian in Worship's Rise in Ruins, not from Honglan.

Cyan: Zhao Yun and the long war

The optional White-Robed Elder questline reveals Zhao Yun (赵云) — Three Kingdoms folk hero — kept alive fourteen centuries by the Cyan Feather Chisel after fighting Bo sorcerers. This is blatant legend grafting: Romance of the Three Kingdoms popularity meets Shu avian war deep time.

Cyan (qīng) + feather ties back to Shanhai Jing feather peoples and game Avian race terminology. Defeating Eternal Glory Zhao Yun yields the fragment needed alongside companion quests to craft the Ring of Samsara – Rebirth for the dream ending path — causality key, not mere stat upgrade.

Reassembling at the Gate of Truth

Late game in Bo Capital under Worship's Rise:

1. Defeat the Demon of Obsession — Wuchang's refusal to mourn Bai Yu, externalized
2. Face Feathery Ambition Xuanyangzi — Taoist who manipulated factions to collect chisels for ascension
3. Enter the Gate of Truth with all five fragments (plus Ring choices for some endings)

Ancient Shu flashbacks state Avians used chisels with Red Mercury to warp fate — connecting the artifact line to Feathering & Red Mercury. The Gate is where myth (broken chisel), history (1647 scavengers), and personal grief (Bai Yu) finally share one interface.
