Characters & Their Roots

Ganyu, Shenhe & the Adeptus Disciples

Half-qilin secretary and mountain disciple — how Ganyu and Shenhe live between adeptus contracts and human feeling, with Cloud Retainer as their shared sky.

Light spoilers. This article discusses character backgrounds and mythic context that may hint at story themes.
Misty mountain peaks with qilin and crane motifs — half-immortals between harbor and hermitage
Ganyu and Shenhe share adeptus ties but opposite lives — one in Liyue's paperwork, one on Cloud Retainer's cliff.

Not every Liyue immortal lives in a cave. Some sit at desks. Ganyu (甘雨) has served Rex Lapis for millennia as secretary and envoy; Shenhe (申鹤) was raised on Jueyun Karst as a disciple of Cloud Retainer (留云借风真君). Both are half-adepti in different senses — mythic blood or brutal training — yet both negotiate the same tension: mountain contracts versus human emotion. This article closes our character series on Liyue roots by explaining the qilin, the disciple tradition, and why these two women hurt differently.

Half-adepti: not quite mortal, not quite hermit

Chinese fantasy loves figures who sit on the threshold — fox spirits in love stories, monks with one foot in the market. Liyue formalizes the type as half-adepti: beings tied to adeptus law and qilin or crane lineage, but still hungry for tea shops, gossip, and the noise Ganyu tries to serve and Shenhe was taught to fear.

Ganyu and the qilin

Ganyu's horns and gentle temperament point at the qilin (麒麟) — a classical auspicious beast, often described with scales, cloven hooves, and a temperament so peaceful it will not tread on living grass. Emperors and ministers invoked the qilin as a sign of righteous rule; seeing one meant the realm had virtue.

Genshin makes Ganyu that symbol turned civil servant: she schedules meetings, negotiates with the Qixing, and still feels out of place at harbor banquets. Culturally, she embodies a Chinese story template — the loyal aide who outlives dynasties — with a mythic species tag attached. Her name 甘雨 ("sweet rain") fits agricultural blessing lore: rain that arrives gently, on time, without disaster.

The qilin — gentle auspicious beast of Chinese folklore
The qilin (麒麟) is a blessing beast — Ganyu's heritage explains why Liyue trusts her with contracts that outlast mortal lifetimes.

For Rex Lapis's contract world, see Morax, Zhongli & the God of Contracts. Ganyu is what happens when a god's promise needs a filing clerk who remembers every version.

Shenhe, disciple of the crane

Shenhe (申鹤) — her name evokes crane (鹤) symbolism, long linked to immortals and longevity in Chinese poetry. After family tragedy, she was taken to Jueyun Karst and trained by Cloud Retainer, an adeptus who builds marvelous machines and speaks like an impatient engineer-sage.

Discipleship (弟子) is central to both Daoist and martial arts storytelling: the master passes down technique, restraint, and worldview. Shenhe's training is extreme — isolation, combat against demonic influence, and the red cord (红绳) that binds her destructive impulses. In folk belief, red thread can tie fate between lovers; here it ties violence down, a literalized metaphor for self-control learned too late.

She is the opposite of Ganyu's harbor integration: Shenhe re-enters society cautiously, while Ganyu never fully left but never fully belongs. Together they show adeptus culture is not one lifestyle — it is a set of obligations you can wear as uniform or armor.

Cloud Retainer (留云借风真君) — crane immortal and inventor — represents the adeptus who refuse harbor life but still guard Liyue from above.

Cloud Retainer and adeptus society

Full adeptus like Cloud Retainer and Mountain Shaper live by contracts with Rex Lapis, intervening when oaths demand and otherwise tinkering in seclusion. For the general primer on immortals and yaksha, see Adepti, Yaksha & Chinese Immortals.

Cloud Retainer's mortal disguise Streetward Rambler (闲云) — a wandering consultant — mirrors Zhongli's Wangsheng role: immortals walk among mortals incognito when the mountain cannot solve the problem. Her relationship with Shenhe and fond exasperation with Ganyu give players a family-shaped view of adeptus politics — gossip, matchmaking, and mechanical cranes included.

Two paths, one contract culture

Ganyu Shenhe
Origin Qilin bloodline Human child, adeptus training
Workplace Qixing meetings, Yuehai Pavilion paperwork Mountain exorcism, Cloud Retainer's tutelage
Conflict Belonging — too human for adepts, too adeptus for humans Control — red cord vs. surging killing intent
Cultural echo Auspicious beast in bureaucracy; sweet rain as blessing Crane immortal disciple; binding rope as discipline

What they are not

Ganyu is not a documented qilin from a specific classical novel; Shenhe is not a named disciple from Daoist canon. HoYoverse uses species and training tropes to make adeptus society feel inhabited — the way opera uses stock roles. Enjoy the cultural rhyme; do not hunt for a single text that "proves" either character.
