SHOWA AMERICAN

STORY

Showa American Story is a single-player action RPG from Wuhan-based NEKCOM Games—the indie studio behind DYING: Reborn—built in Unreal Engine 5 after an early UE4 prototype. Set in Showa 66 (1991), the game imagines an alternate America where Japan's economic bubble never burst and Japanese cultural colonization reshaped the United States before a mysterious catastrophe plunged the continent into a post-apocalyptic wasteland of zombies, monsters, and survivors. Play as Chouko Chigusa, a 19-year-old stuntwoman miraculously revived from the dead, as she crosses a semi-open world of city-sized sandboxes—from Neo Yokohama (formerly Hollywood) to Texas—in a camper, motorcycle, and other vehicles to uncover the truth, find her missing sister, and exact revenge. Real-time melee and ranged combat, B-movie tone, and a flood of 1980s–90s Japanese and American pop-culture parody drawn from a distinctly Chinese perspective define this "love letter to Showa-era pop culture." Theme song: Daijiman Brothers Band's "Sore ga Daiji." First teased as Project SAS in September 2021; formally unveiled January 7, 2022; second trailer November 1, 2024. Global publishing by GCL's 4Divinity (following a 20% stake in NEKCOM, December 2024) with 2P Games handling Asia excluding Japan. Planned for PC (Steam) and PlayStation 5 in 2026 after a delay from 2025 to ensure quality.
